Collecting materials- Emma Senior
I have now started to collect natural materials to both use in my work and also to inspire my work and also patterns and images I find interesting. I decided to try making a mould of part of a tree that I found peculiar using latex, I then wanted to make a mould of this using wax and some of the natural materials I had collected as I thought they would resemble a birds nest, such as ones using their own faeces and natural materials such as twigs. The outcome of this isn't how I expected, the wax looked like ice with twigs and things stuck inside. I want a warmer feel to my work. I have now thought of making a mould of a bird feeder using latex and then wax again and then seeing what it looks like shining light through it, appearing like a lamp shade. I think this could work really effectively.
An Idea I had to write down Charlotte Sleigh
I was just photographing some tulips that were in a vase in my house, the beautiful tonal qualities in the drooping petals caught my attention. I then began to realize some of the petals had fallen on the floor so I picked them up and thought I could draw from them or take inspiration from the colours. I then had an idea that I could use petals to cover a harsh ugly object such as a brick I could even experiment with other natural materials such as twigs or moss. This could so effective on a larger scale, I might create one brick made from petals photograph it and multiply it in Photoshop so that you can see how it might look.

Sandra Hurl
As part of my project i am looking at Greece and Manchester from different perspectives and comparing the two, i began looking for textile artists that could link to my work. I found Sandra Hurl's work and was instantly attracted to the use of colour and lines. In response to this research i found some birds-eye view images of both Manchester and Greece so you can see the difference is cities and towns and i will then create embroidered samples in response.

Lyme Park Charlotte Sleigh
Today, I decided to visit Lyme park as I initially wanted to take some photographs of flowers I suppose picturesque kind of things I also wanted to look at taking photos of decorative iron railings. When I got there I began to take photo's of daffodils, but as I wondered round I started to take a more focused approach by photographing bark and fungi on tree trunks and twigs, I also managed to take some of iron railings and detailing on doors. However, I was far more impressed and intrigued by my photos of bark and fungi. When looking back through them I began to realize that the fungi was almost wrapped around the tree trunks and branches almost like wrapping paper, this funnily enough links well with my idea of using a projection of a design to cover a room or building, I now really like the idea of wrapping and camouflaging to make an object appear or feel completely different.

Rhian Bell- Lauren Bowker talk
I found this talk interesting. Lauren spoke about how she approaches things with an open mind. I loved her piece on the jacket that breathed. She created a jacket using inks made up in the science lab which changes colour with pollution. I liked the idea of using science in art, combining two totally different professions and mixing them together is exciting and very risky. She spoke about how if you have a good idea you can go anywhere with it. You just have to believe in the idea. Being in Manchester helped her make many different friends, she said meeting people was an important thing in the world of art as the more people you know with different professions the more exciting a project can become. I felt this was very inspiring to me. I was really interested in the project she did in combination with two other students, one an engineer and one a graphic designer. Airbus 2050. This is an exciting project which is really interesting!! Doing something totally different to what you’re used to is exciting and taking risks brings that enthusiasm out of you. This got me thinking about how we as textile students should take risks and be wild. Take a wild card and see where you end up, people want to be surprised...
