Fine Liners Charlotte Sleigh

I have been drawing from photographs which I took whilst at Lyme park, I rally enjoy drawing in fine liners and creating a piece which I have put time and effort into, these drawings tend to take me a while to do but I am generally always satisfied when they are finished. I have in previous projects been told I spend far too long on this kind of drawing, and I would agree that I do but, I always find they help me get into my topic. I would maybe like to use these in Photoshop.

Petal Mache

I really couldn't wait to see if it would be possible to use petals instead of paper to 'paper' mache. I decided to wrap cling film around part of my hand and cover it in pva glue, this was messy but enjoyable. As it started to dry i began to wrap petals around the glue and cling film cast. I am quite pleased with the outcome, it's only very rough as I slightly rushed it so I think if I maybe did it over a few days it would be even stronger and more successful. I think this will be how I create my petal brick!

I quite like how the light shines through the petals in this photo, a finished piece using this technique and involves lighting or natural light could be effective.

Initial Ideas- Wall Piece- Ailsa Lishman

Just thought I'd post my wall pieces, I thought it was really helpful to build models onto the wall to try and create a feel of what we wanted to put into the new build. It definitely helped me develop some more ideas, hope it did for everyone else too!

Rhian Bell- Something I found interesting

I came across these lampshades the other day which really caught my attention..

I thought they were very interesting and I was inspired by the use of recycled materials. I liked how  light was projected through the bottle tops and created shadows. This got me thinking about using recycled materials from around Manchester to create something interesting in the new buliding, prehaps a lampshade made from recycled flyers as there are so many given out all the time!! I feel this come bring a sense of life to the new building...

Arrivals Task - Kate Ward

My place of arrival was Cornwall. It was a summer road trip last summer with one of my best friends. We were so excited it was the first time ide driven that far, well couldn’t or driven any further if ide of wanted. We had all our things in my little car ready for our adventure(bit like when I moved to Manchester) We set off in the middle of the night so we could get there early and make a day of it, as soon as we got there. Wed both been down to Cornwall a lot before, myself, was with my family, but this time it was different. My friend and I are both art people, who met during our foundation course, so were both interested in a lot of the same stuff.
For me I like Cornwall as I think its quant and scenic. It’s all about the atmosphere, laid back, yet still buzzing with people and lots of things to do. I’ve never felt it anywhere else, beauty and it’s in ENGLAND! Our trip was for exploring so what better place to start than at the beach.
It was quiet a journey to the beach and took us a while to get there. We decided we would walk it from the camp site we were staying at, but we kept following the signs and it didn’t seem to be taking us in the right direction. By the end we had gone through the middle of a golf course over an old railway line and over some very large sand dunes, until eventually we could see it, the beach! We reached the sand and the sun came out began to come out, the clouds were clearing and all our efforts had paid off, we couldn’t wait to dip our feet in the water. As well as finding shells acting like big kids investigating. It felt like we were the only ones there, it was so quiet so relaxed and tranquille. For me the beauty was in the ripples of the sand.

EXPLORING - Eden Project
Ide seen what the Eden project looked like, but nothing prepared me for the strange looking domes, inside was so real, so amazing. It simple took my breath away… quite literally in the rainforest, it was so hot. The Eden project was somewhere ide always wanted to go mainly because nature, plants and the environment interests me. It was just so amazing. There was so many things explore.
The exotic flowers and textures, the wall of sunflowers, the vegetable garden, the giant bee and the dancing women attached to a balloon in the rainforest, abit like a fantasy land. I just fell in love with the place.

London Trip- Emma Senior

I have now started doing a commissioned project with Jai Redman artist/ designer who works with The Ultimate Holding Company and is doing work with Unit X at uni, and Robyn Woolston an artist/ film maker. The project is based around the idea of the textiles industry in Whitechapel in London. I wanted this project to run along side my Unit X project so I have decided I wanted to create a calm comforting space in the centre of Whitechapel for people to use. My visit to London was based around Whitechapel and the architecture that could inspire my designs, but I also managed to visit the Whitechapel Art Gallery which was very interesting, including the works on Number 10 Downing Street and the unusual pieces that the workers there had chosen to be displayed inside.

Research Ideas- Emma Senior

I came across an interesting felting book that gives information on how to create more three dimensional pieces, this could become very useful. I also came across other books and articles that might be useful to some of you, with all the mess with the group blogs I'm a bit unsure of what everyone is doing for their project. But I found a book on a woman who creates textile buildings, this might be useful to Tatum, its 'Kehraus' by Annette Streyl, I found it in the uni library but you can easily find her work online. And Ailsa I found some gorgeous floral patterns in A Manish Arora s/s 07 collection. Hope these are useful!
