I attended a talk by Terry Wyke at the Zion Arts Centre in Hulme, I was really interested to see what the Zion Arts Centre was all about, and what was going on there.
The Zion Arts Centre building used to be a church and is a really great space, and there seems to be a lot of activities going on there, from art groups using exhibition space, theatre performances, to exercise classes, pretty flexible really!
Terry Wyke's talk focused on the history of Manchester and its theatres. Terry spoke of how industrial Manchester was, and the main aim in peoples lives back in the 18th Century was to survive and not much else. 30 years old in those days was considered old. You were lucky if you lived past infancy.
It's alarming how hard it was to survive back then, and I think we're really lucky to be in so much of a better place right now, and we should really use that to our advantage and make our mark upon the city.
The cotton trade seemed to be what saved Manchester, so important in society, giving thousands jobs.
It's interesting to see how so much has changed since then, but evidence is still there.
Oxford Road used to be Manchester's entertainment strip, with theatres running up and down, evidence of which is still there; The Palace Theatre which still runs as a theatre, others now as other things, such as McDonalds, which used to be a cinema. The words are still engraved onto the building.
Traces of the past are still all around us.
